Sustainable Solutions at Times of Transition (SuST)

Resilient Communities and Sustainable Islands

15-17 September 2025, Nisyros Island, Greece

Ecologically destructive human practices that bring about climate change, have increased the risk of extreme weather events, food system failures, biodiversity loss, social inequalities, and geopolitical instability. As we struggle to face the ecological crisis and collapse in what has been called the Age of Multicrises, environmental and social sustainable and resilient practices have become a vital issue for the survival of humanity.

Sustainability is related to systemic health and resilience at different scales, from local to regional and global. It involves a broader view of the importance of various capitals, their coexistence and mutual symbiosis. It requires “Closing the loop” of product lifecycles through greater recycling and re-use, as well as using resources in a sustainable way from production and consumption to waste management. At the same time, dealing with the climate emergency requires a re-assessment and reconfiguration of innovation and technological changes that have a great impact on the environmental, social, and economic aspects of life in our planet. Achieving systemic changes requires fundamental, transformative, and cross-cutting changes and rethinking of status quo sustainability. What is more, political responses and policy strategies are needed to move on from business as usual. Relatedly, the climate crisis calls for reconsidering science-society interfaces given that alarming facts provided by experts do not appear to spur society to action. Against this background, the symposium covers a wide range of topics linked to human-environment relations and transformations towards sustainability.

OBJECTIVE

The symposium focuses on (trans)national and regional as well as urban, rural, and insular contexts given their diverse socio-economic conditions, political trajectories, and vulnerabilities to climate change. The major objective of the symposium is to promote the scientific dialogue supporting not only the sustainable management of natural resources and the shift to renewables but also the deconstruction of the dominant productivist paradigm. This can be achieved by addressing the technical, socio-economic, ecological and political dimensions in the context of Accelerating the Transition to Equitable, Sustainable, Post-Fossil-Carbon Societies.

GOAL

The conference aims to provide an international interactive space for scholars and practitioners from all disciplines and fields to discuss research results, ideas, and experiences in the light of the climate crisis. To that end, we invite experts to present their research and discuss their work in the context of increasing climate shocks and catastrophes and environmental degradation, and the need for integrating resilience and equity into all levels of society to reduce vulnerabilities and social upheavals. Researchers can exchange ideas and explore multiple dimensions of systemic, holistic, and synergistic approaches for improving and applying sustainability principles in the context of climate change and related uncertainties, and plan and foster future collaborations.
