THE CREATION OF NISYROS IN THE METOPE OF THE PARTHENON

According to Greek mythology, during the Battle of the Giants, that is, the battle of Gods and Giants, Poseidon, chasing the Giant Polyvotis in the Aegean Sea, cut off a part of the Island of Kos with his trident, hurled it against Polyvotis and threw it. This part of Kos is Nisyros and when the overwhelmed Giant moves his shoulders and roars, Nisyros is shaken by earthquakes.

The representation of this myth, the creation of Nisyros, exists in the 6th eastern metope of the Parthenon and is exhibited in the Acropolis museum, with a special description of the event.
