ΜΑΝΔΡΑΚΙ

Mandraki is the largest settlement on the island, where the port is located  Folklore Museum, the  Archaeological Museum, the  Paleokastro  (6th-4th BC), the  Venetian Castle  with the  Panagia Spiliani  (14th century, celebrated from 6 to 15 August), the  Municipal Thermal Baths, the pebbled squares of the City Hall and the River and the  beach of Hochlaka  for swimming with the unique sunset.

OLD

Picturesque fishing village, the port of Emporio with the possibility of mooring. There are the  Hippocratic baths, the  Panagia Thermiani, the  Thick sand  and the  Lies, wonderful beaches for swimming, as well as several taverns.

TRADE

The mountainous traditional settlement with  Castle of Pantoni, their church  Brigadier General, the  Natural Sauna  with the wonderful view to the Caldera, Profitis Ilias and two taverns with traditional food.

NIKEA

The mountain settlement with the peculiar architecture and the panoramic view to the Caldera. The open-air geological museum with craters  Stefanos, Polyvoti,  etc. You will need the necessary equipment to enjoy this unique natural phenomenon.

The intense  Byzantine presence  of Nisyros is captured on  Early Christian basilicas  and in  chapels  which are scattered throughout the island, with famous murals of special archaeological and tourist interest. Access to these chapels is through picturesque cobblestone paths.
In Nisyros we also find many important monasteries:

  • The monastery complex of Stavros is located on the hill of the western part of the valley of Lakki (Volcano) and celebrates on September 14.

  • The Monastery of Panagia Kyra is located in an area of exceptional archaeological importance. It celebrates on the 23rd of August.

  • The Monastery of Agios Ioannis the Theologian is located in the village of Nikeia and celebrates on September 26.

  • The Monastery of Evangelistria, which is only 4 km from Mandraki, celebrates the Brilliant Tuesday.

In Mandraki there is the  Knightly Castle  in which her monastery is located  Panagia Spiliani, whose foundation dates back to around 1400. From classical antiquity the acropolis of the ancient city of Mandraki is preserved in very good condition,  the Paleokastro. The total length of the fortification is very large. The wall and the cliff delimit an area of a total area of about 130 acres, with a total perimeter of almost 2 kilometers, while the weight of some of the stones that make up the wall reaches 3.5 tons.

Other Knight Castles are:
of  Emporio, in which there is the  Byzantine church of Taxiarchis, with frescoes of significant value, of  Nikion, the remains of which are found at the highest point of the settlement from where one overlooks the surrounding islands and the volcano and at the location Argos in the monastery of the Holy Cross.  In Palos there are the Ancient Roman Baths and inside them is built the church of Panagia Thermiani.

beaches

The coasts, mostly rocky, are interrupted by a few but idyllic beaches, which exist around the island such as: the beach of Palos, Pachia Ammos, Lyes and the only beach of Hochlakos that got its name thanks to the large black pebbles from lava. There are also beautiful beaches on the nearby island of Giali.

CULTURE - TRADITION

As it happens all over Greece, so in Nisyros the customs and traditions of the island are many and pass unchanged from generation to generation. Especially the wedding ceremony and the baptisms are performed in a very ceremonial and formal way. At various festivals and festivals the inhabitants wear their traditional costumes, the breeches the men and the embroidered shirt the women. The people of Nisyria love dancing and singing, which are never missing from their amazing celebrations.

The festivals and festivals are very important cultural elements and for this reason they are held in public buildings such as the Zosimopouleio Theater of Nisyros, in which the hall and the courtyard are held the traditional wedding feasts and the big, crowded festival of Panagia Spilia. .

The traditional instruments of Nisyros are the violin, the santouri and the lute. Her traditional food is  the boukounies (pork cooked with fat), the kapamas (stuffed goat), the pithia (chickpea meatballs), the mizithra, the agraphythosumo, the capers, the cheese of the cheese,  etc., while the exceptional traditional sweets have a great variety, from xerotigana, diples and donuts to palm trees, kourabiedes, mustalefria, spoon sweets (orange, quince, tomato), pastellaria (figs opened with almond kernels and sesame). Everything gives a special color to the festivals and festivals of the inhabitants of Nisyros and is an additional enjoyable experience for the visitor.

There are also traditional drinks such as  orgeat  (bitter almond juice) and the  kitchen  (grape or fig extract having a similar taste to raki). All of these are made with traditional recipes that are passed down from generation to generation and are a seven-seal secret for the few makers.
